The Dunnes set off on a two-month boat trip that will bring them closer together, despite the stepfather Peter staying behind. But teenage daughter Carrie plans to drown herself, and Mark is high on drugs. Ten-year-old Ernie is near catatonic. Their mother Katherine, with the help of her brother-in-law Jake, is insistent on pulling everyone together. Then a storm hits the sailboat which vanishes without a trace, the family is lost, presumed dead, until a message in a bottle is found.
