An English professor receives a manuscript from a deceased former student. It tells the story how he, Jack Springs, became aquainted with a mysterious Japanese professor of American literature, named Goto in Kobe, 1992. Goto was a collector of literary rarities, manuscripts, and books, and provided Jack with revelations about literary giants, until the tragic events on the day of the Great Kobe Earthquake threatened to destroy all that had been revealed.
