Twelve-year-old Sumiko lives on a flower farm in California. She is the only Japanese-American girl in her class. Then the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor and the United States government send all Japanese to internment camps. Sumiko and her family are shipped to an Indian reservation in the Arizona desert. Helping old Mr. Moto plant a garden and developing a friendship with young Mohave Frank helps Sumiko realize the reason her grandfather left Japan for America.
