When his superiors learn that Roth, a twenty-one-year-old German soldier, speaks French, he is transferred to Gestapo headquarters to work as an interpreter during the interrogation of Resistance fighters. When his duty ends, Roth wanders through Paris, and in a bookshop becomes enchanted with the bookseller's daughter, Chantal.
