Set in the early 1900s in a New England college town, the novel tells the story of a man's obsession with his young wife. Told from his perspective, it begins the moment they first meet - as he helps her escape from a hotel fire. Immediately smitten, he woos her and persuades her to become his wife. But Etna keeps her secrets and her feelings to herself. The extent of the withholding only becomes clear after a couple of kids and many years of marriage. Then it shows that she's been creating a secret haven for herself all along.
