Withdrawn, uneducated and unloved, Frederick collects butterflies and takes photographs. He is obsessed with the beautiful art student Miranda. He captures her and keeps her in the cellar of his Sussex house believing she will grow to love him. Miranda, desperate for her freedom, tries to be understanding but cannot banish her contempt.
